FAQ about Fear

What is fear?
Merriam Webster Dictionary defines fear as “an unpleasant often strong emotion caused by anticipation or awareness of danger”. According to Psychology Today, it is an emotional response due to perceived danger that may lead you to hide, run away or freeze.

What causes fear?
We develop fear as a result of the things we learn in our environment. It could be either experiencing or knowing(watching, hearing) about a traumatic situation. You feel fear when you perceive that you as a person or a loved one or your belongings are under attack and could be harmed. According to multiple reports, people fear most specifically death, the unknown and have countless of phobias. Common fears and phobias are: terrorist attacks, criminal or gang violence, being alone, spiders, cockroaches, snakes, heights, failure, war, ghosts and public speaking.

What God says about fear?
God tells us in the Scripture to never fear. He says in Isaiah 41:10: Do not fear, for I am with you; do not be dismayed, for I am your God. Not only God, but several man of God wrote beautifully in the Bible about not fearing, such as King David in Psalm 23 and Apostle Paul in Philippians 4:6.

Does the Bible say not to be anxious?
Yes. Apostle Paul tells us clearly in Philippians 4:6: Do not be anxious about anything, but in every situation, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God.

How many times is fear mentioned in the Bible?
According to SwordSearcher, which is a Bible study tool, the word ‘fear’ appears 400 times in 385 verses of the Authorized King James Version Bible.

How can I overcome fear and anxiety?
From a Christian perspective, you may overcome fear and anxiety by praying, reading your Bible daily, participate in several Church activities or by visiting a professional in the field. The best way to overcome fear is to changing your perspective and try to focus on something bigger than yourself. And that something is a someone: The Lord of Heaven and Earth. If you do as Apostle Paul says, which is to pray and present your request to God, He is faithful to give you the peace of mind that the world cannot give. Please, don’t keep your fears and anxieties to yourself, but talk to a friend, your pastor or spiritual counselor as soon as possible.

Does prayer reduce anxiety?
Yes, prayer can reduce and relief you from anxiety. There are several instances in the Bible where they used prayer to calm anxiety. Two great examples are King David and Apostle Paul. King David was a man who struggled greatly with anxiety. He used prayer, praise and worship to escape his fears. Read for example Psalm 23, Psalm 27, Psalm 34, Psalm 61:1-3 and Psalm 91. Apostle Paul endured tremendous fear and anxiety when they imprisoned him, yet he told us in Philippians 4:6 to not be anxious but pray to God for deliverance. One last note: Remember that Jesus is the Prince of Peace(Isaiah 9:6). So, since Jesus is the Prince of Peace, we know as His followers that there is nothing we need to be anxious about or to fear.
